Let's talk ethics.

Ethical sourcing can have a different meaning to everyone. Here, I will discuss the methods of collection.

Related to the topic at hand or not, I am a vegan. The welfare of these beings is the most important to me. I have my own millipedes, geckos, and mantises that I keep as pets and adore with all of me, to name a few. I have experienced birth in many different forms just as I have experienced death. There is nothing more precious than this cycle, and I hope that I can spread that awareness.

When deforestation, disease, and the natural cycle of life occurs, licensed importers or appreciators gather nature’s remains. This is a lengthy process with a mixed yield. However, it is still a good means of collection - and one I personally practice, too.
This method provides mostly native and local species, with the exception of those that are invasive. I have collected insects such as honey and bumble bees, june beetles, and the occasional swallowtail.

In other cases, conservation aviaries globally distribute deceased specimens to museums, universities, and businesses - of which I then source from. This is a wonderful way to support those aviaries, as funding is needed to help save certain species of butterfly. This support chain can go far!

Additionally, providers such as breeders (both personal & chain), museums, and universities allocate not only insects, but also vertebrates like rabbits and lizards. These are caused by natural situations, such as a failure to thrive.

Finally, there is the effect of civilization that we must recognize. My vertebrate remains (including coyote, raccoon, etc) are often sourced from roadkill, waste, or sustainable trapping byproduct. Some are, thankfully, accumulated via natural causes, in which they are found in nature or a farm/conservatory may have a passing. I despise the thought of the remnants going to waste and being discarded without further thought, so I collect them.

Above all, my goal is to give these beauties a new life and appreciation where it would otherwise be lost. If I have the opportunity to give an angel a second chance or a resting place, I absolutely will. With that being said, all of my pieces are totally unique, shaped and created by my hands with care and love. Please expect the subjects within to show the wear of its past life, such as broken antenna, legs, curved abdomens, nicks, etc. Those unique features just define them a little more. <3
